Just as I was opening a bottle of wine, the phone rang.
“Hello” I answered.
“Hey Ade,” a voice responded at the other end, “How’s it going?” It was my friend Geoff.
“Not bad thanks Geoff” I replied, grabbing two wine glasses. “The boys are in bed, and I’m about to enjoy a well deserved glass of wine and film with my wife. What are you up to?”
“Not much…” Geoff responded.
“Really — I thought you and Angela were going on a ‘date night’ tonight?” I asked as I passed a glass of wine to my beautiful wife.
“We were…” Geoff replied. He didn’t sound his usual bubbly self.
“Is everything ok?” I asked, flicking through the movies channel to see when the next showing of “Dallas Buyers Club” was scheduled to start.
“Not really…” Geoff said hesitantly.
He had my full attention now. “What’s wrong?” I asked with concern, putting the cable remote down.
“Well…you know how Angela’s always telling me to be more open and honest with her?” Geoff said.
“Yeah…” I replied uneasily
“Well, we planned to go for a meal and catch a play at the theatre tonight. Angela was really looking forward to it and had even bought a lovely new dress for the occasion. And when she asked me how she looked in it, I told her…”
“And what exactly did you tell her?” I asked hesitantly, dreading the response as I took a sip of wine.
A short pause from Geoff, followed by a deep sigh; “I told her the dress was beautiful – but it made her look fat.”
I nearly choked on my wine.
“Please tell me you’re joking?” I exclaimed
“I wish I was.” he replied.
“Are you crazy?” I yelled down the phone, almost spilling my wine all over the couch. “What were you thinking?”
“That’s the problem…” Geoff said despondently, “I wasn’t thinking. And now I’m in the dog house.”
Poor Geoff 🙁
But Geoff’s not alone with this problem. Because at some point in our lives, most of us have said or done something without thinking.
I know I have. How about you?
Which begs the question…
Do we really know what thinking is?
According to Linda Rising (author of ‘Fearless Change: Patterns for Introducing New Ideas’), most people don’t – even though they might think they do. As you know, Linda is a world re known and highly respected Agile consultant and patterns expert speaker who has spent many years studying the latest research in neuro science – so I think (pun intended) it might be safe to assume that Linda knows what she’s talking about!
In this video, Linda Rising shares some valuable thinking tips and strategies for solving problems, making better decisions and achieving your goals quicker. Linda also shares some valuable strategies for overcoming resistance to Agile.
Have a watch and and let me know what you think!!

Best video so far in my opinion …experimentation is the path to Agile as a change, supported by some other tools and tricks. I worry about people stopping at WaterScrumFall “because we’re on a journey” but if people stick to core principles, change experiments are the way to go for continuos progression towards Agile and Lean.
Spot on John – successful Agile transition/application is an’inspect and adapt’ cycle. The journey is one of continuous improvement where — regardless of where we might be today — we should always strive to do and be better! I’m glad you enjoyed the video; thanks for the feedback 🙂
